Christmas Village top FINISHED!

This was a week of wrestling with everything. I wrestled with getting a good photo of the Christmas Village quilt, finished last week. After three tries, finally produced a picture I’m happy to share. I’m really pleased with how this quilt turned out, especially since so much of the center panel was done flying by the seat of my pants.

Wrestling Binding

I wrestled with my extra-large Log Cabin quilt, piling it up on my little table to sew on the binding. This top was finished years ago and then it sat and waited for me to gain the skill to quilt it. Thankfully, I came to my senses and realized that machine quilting was not a skill that would just happen, and with my space and time restrictions, I’d rather have quilting done by a pro. I took the quilt to The Last Stitch in San Juan Bautista, and they did a fabulous job with a difficult quilt and a difficult pattern. The whole quilt is on point, and a little wonky to boot; and then just to make everything a little harder, I wanted it quilted in vertical stripes, which meant it needed to go on the frame sideways. Anneke Wheaton wrestled it into submission and did a beautiful job with it; it’s everything I’d imagined and I am very happy with her work.

Setting Blocks for Grandmother's Choice

And finally, I’m wrestling with the setting blocks for the Grandmother’s Choice quilt that I hope to start Real Soon Now. The blocks will be made with the white and yellow fabrics shown, but I can’t decide if I like the warm, vibrant color of the yellow right side up, or the softer, more subtle look of the reverse. The quilt blocks will use the background fabrics plus colors from the African Violet family. That was a particular favorite of my Grandmother Violet, and I think it will make a pretty and meaningful quilt. Suggestions welcome, if you have them!

Last but not least, check out what other quilters are wrestling with at Judy Laquidara’s Design Wall Monday.

I think your Christmas Village quilt is proof that you should fly by the seat of your pants more often :-)

As for your yellow dilemma, I would likely use a lot of different yellows with the intent of getting the look of dappled sunshine across your quilt.

Dappled sunlight, now that's a very engaging idea! I'll have to think about that (I have quite a few yellows in the stash, in fact.)

Thank you! I'm really happy with the way it turned out. Two different panels (for the cats and the Christmas tree) and a whole bunch of fiddling, but it was fun.
